Etiquette

DP Etiquette

First rule: Don't be a jackass. Most people are good.

Other rules: Do not attack or insult people you disagree with. Engage with facts, logic and beliefs. Out of respect for others, please provide some sources for the facts and truths you rely on if you are asked for that. If emotion is getting out of hand, get it back in hand. To limit dehumanizing people, don't call people or whole groups of people disrespectful names, e.g., stupid, dumb or liar. Insulting people is counterproductive to rational discussion. Insult makes people angry and defensive. All points of view are welcome, right, center, left and elsewhere. Just disagree, but don't be belligerent or reject inconvenient facts, truths or defensible reasoning.

Some comments by a democracy expert; Some comments about the 60 Minutes CBS broadcast

In an April 2025 NPR interview, democracy & dictatorship expert Steve Levitsky (professor of government, Harvard) made these comments.

  • Q: What kind of autocracy might we become? A: I think the most likely outcome is a slide into what I call competitive authoritarianism. These are regimes that constitutionally continue to be democracies. There is a Constitution. There are regular elections, a legislature and importantly, the opposition is legal, above ground and competes for power. So from a distance, if you squint, it looks like a democracy, but the problem is that systematic abuse of power tilts the playing field against the opposition.

  • Q: I wonder if there's anything comparable in Putin's rise in Russia, where you had oligarchs who made fortunes and increased Putin's power by allying themselves to his administration. A: The parallel that I see to Putin - and I don't want to draw it too far because the regime in Russia is very authoritarian, much, much more so than anything in the United States, I think, even could become. But the parallel I would draw to oligarchs in the Putin case are more the Zuckerbergs and the Jeff Bezos'. Putin is the guy in charge. The oligarchs are able to make a lot of money, but Putin made it very, very clear soon after he became president that the deal was these guys could make money through legal and illegal means, but the one rule was that they had to stay out of politics. If you financed the opposition, you were done. .... So Bezos and Zuckerberg kind of acquiesce getting on their knees to Trump, that - I see that parallel.

  • Q: What's the state of the Republican Party? What's its role in all of this? A: I think the Republican Party has a crucial and really underappreciated role in all of this. It would be pretty easy to put the brakes on what the Trump administration is doing. It would only take a handful of Republicans. It would not take a majority of Republicans. It wouldn't even take a large faction of Republicans could change the dynamic and put the brakes on what is a pretty radical authoritarian turn in the last four months. But the party now, now sort of purged of its last Adam Kinzingers and Liz Cheneys, is almost uniform in backing an openly authoritarian figure or at least acquiescing to an openly authoritarian figure. Unlike 2016, '17, there's no serious debate about Donald Trump's authoritarianism.
Yup, no serious debate about Trump's authoritarianism.

In a weird article, techdirt writes about that nutty interview on 60 Minutes that CBS News aired last Sunday:
60 Minutes is under new management and things are getting stupid faster than you might expect. Last night’s episode featured President Trump, which is currently being described as “nuts.” There are all sorts of crazy moments to call out, but let’s start with the recursively meta nonsense.

60 Minutes edited out a segment where Donald Trump tells them to edit out a segment in which he brags about getting CBS to pay him because of them editing out part of an answer by Kamala Harris, and he notes that CBS clearly did the wrong thing in editing Harris in the same fucking sentence he tells them to edit out what he’s saying.

It is so fucking stupid.

I feel the need to repeat this because it is so incredibly stupid. Literally in the same sentence where he says CBS had to pay him “a lotta money” because it edited a 60 Minutes interview, he tells them to edit the interview not to air that section. Then he claims “you can’t have fake news.” Even though what he’s claiming is literally fake news. They didn’t pay him because they changed the answer. They paid him to get their merger done. Everyone knows it.

Yup, fucking stupid. Also dangerous, insulting and terrifying. And tens of millions of adult Americans still love the guy, believe he is a truth-teller and on their side. Un-fracking-believable.

MAGA dictatorship update: The CBS News collapse

About a month ago, CBS News was subverted by a radical Zionist Billionaire who supports Trump and dictatorship. The billionaire, David Ellison (heir to a ~$290 billion Oracle Corp. fortune), installed Bari Weiss, an aggressive radical Zionist propagandist to head news at CBS. The poisonous presence of Weiss is obvious. In yesterday's 60 Minutes news interview broadcast, Trump praised CBS's "new leader," referring to Bari Weiss, who was appointed editor-in-chief following Paramount's acquisition by Ellison, whose father is a Trump supporter.

The Baily Beast reports that the 60 Minutes broadcast got rid of a segment where editors cut a contentious exchange about cryptocurrency corruption from the aired version of Trump's interview. We know it was deliberately edited out of what was aired because the deleted portion of the interview was included in the full transcript.

The removed segment indicated that Trump was got angry when pressed about potential corruption related to his pardon of crypto billionaire Changpeng "CZ" Zhao. When interviewer Norah O'Donnell asked about "the appearance of corruption," Trump responded defensively, saying "I'd rather not have you ask the question". He said he could have walked away from the interview.

Obviously, elite Trump authoritarians want to make Trump look less corrupt and childishly emotional than he clearly is. Those elite supporters now control CBS News. CBS used to be called the Tiffany Network. Trump has degraded it into the Dictator Network

About the failing MSM: Why it accords Trump too much deference

It's probably no mystery to many people as to why the MSM continues to accord Trump far more deference than warranted by his track record of moral rot, lying and secrecy. The MSM is scared. Owners need to protect their investments and revenue streams. Truth is secondary to profits.

That reflects a core point of antagonism between capitalism and democracy. With capitalism, profit trumps politics, including democracy. Capitalist sacrifices to defend democracy are, as Milty Friedman might have remarked, subversive and not to be encouraged. Capitalism and high quality professional reporting are often not compatible with each other. Money talks, inconvenient news walks.

MSM headlines tend to say it all. For example, The Hill: Trump’s MRI scan raises specter of secrecy in presidential health. Raises the specter of secrecy? That horse got out of the barn years ago. That headline should read: Trump withholds his MRI scan from the public. That gets right to the point.

Given his track record of secrecy, including lying about and hiding his health condition, untainted professional news reporting would to call out the secrecy and let Trump prove otherwise, e.g., by showing his genuine, verified, unaltered MRI scan.

Or he can easily show his still secret tax returns. Remember the tax returns he promised to show us? They're still "being audited". Also, pigs can fly. Pigs with lipstick are sexy. Etc.

Yabbut, pigs really can fly!

But defaulting to truth just ain't how the MSM works any more, at least when the truth is inconvenient for Trump or MAGA elites. MSM owners are scared. They don't want to irritate Trump or alienate rank, file MAGA people or advertisers with messy, cognitive dissonance-generating inconvenient truth. Inconvenient truth just ain't good for business.

So, professional reporting and commentary standards have been adjusted to serve the profit motive. The MSM loves its euphemisms (“falsehoods,” “misstatements”) to avoid truth such as “lies”, “racist”, “authoritarian” or “corrupt,” even in cases where evidence is overwhelming.

The money before truth reality is a democracy killer. One expert, Yale historian Timothy Snyder, characterized the MSM's both-sidesism (false balancing) as "suicide for democracy". He asserts that when journalists insist** on finding middle ground between truth and lies, "you are always going to give the people who want to overthrow the system an advantage".

** Actually it isn't only journalists who insist. It's also corporate owners and advertisers who demand.

Autocratic legalism: How dictators do the rule of law

Autocratic legalism uses existing legal institutions and procedures to systematically dismantle democratic norms while maintaining the facade of lawfulness. Experts believe that most modern democratic decline now occurs through gradual legal manipulation rather than military coups or sudden authoritarian takeovers. Authoritarian leaders are legally given power but then use it to dismantle democracy. Hitler and Mussolini gained power legally, and then dismantled democracy to install their dictatorships. Like Hitler and Mussolini, Trump uses autocratic legalism to wreck democracy. He differs by coming to power via elections, not appointment to power by incompetent broken governments.

Slate reports that our MAGAfied and weaponized DOJ (Department of Justice) engages in autocratic legalism. When the DOJ got caught blatantly lying to the court, it only acknowledged "errors" after plaintiffs exposed the deception through discovery. The DOJ expressed "regret" for "unintended ambiguity" rather than admitting deliberate misrepresentation. So, not only is MAGA fabricating evidence to deceive federal courts, is says fuck you to the court when it gets caught.

For those interested, the DOJ fabricated evidence that convinced a 9th Circuit Court panel to allow Trump's deployment of the National Guard in Portland. In sworn testimony, DOJ attorney Robert Cantu falsely claimed that 115 Federal Protective Service (FPS) officers—nearly 25% of the agency's total workforce—had been deployed to Portland to protect an ICE facility during protests.

Unintended ambiguity my ass. What a cynical liar.
